Health Insurance Sounds Like A Simple Thing To Have.

I've sat across from people who haven't seen a doctor in years, not because they were careless with their health, but because they couldn't afford to be anything else. When you're working to keep the lights on and food on the table, going in for a checkup becomes a luxury you quietly decide to live without. It's the math of survival.

Last year, I shared about helping families apply for Kaiser Permanente's Community Health Care Program, a path to coverage for those who'd been turned away from Medi-Cal. Among them was a couple who felt like they'd hit rock bottom, hoping for a way out and onto some kind of stability with their health. We worked through the application together, and they were approved.

Now that renewal season has opened again, I got to reconnect with them.

They walked into Casa Unidos with a new familiarity; not the same hesitation from last year. They shared about their year with health insurance: appointments they made, being treated with dignity, feeling like less of a burden to the people who love them. For the first time in a long time, they said, they felt like they were standing on solid ground. We walked through the renewal application together.

Now, we wait.
