“Luz, I have been approved! God listened to my prayers.”

These past three months I’ve been working with our community, helping neighbors apply for Kaiser Permanente’s Community Health Care Program. Each person comes in with their own stories of struggling with their health, and many see this program as their last hope.

One neighbor in her late sixties stuck out to me. She struggled to walk as she came into our meeting and was accompanied by her husband. They clung to each other and referred to each other only as “mi amor” throughout our meetings. In recent months, she suffered a diabetic coma and a stroke. While she came out of her coma, she has not regained full movement on the left side of her body. Pushing through tears, she shared that after her insurance was denied she could no longer afford care and lived every day in fear she would have another stroke or fall into a coma again.

We immediately got to work. We completed her application together and waited for an answer. We both carried the wait of a few days, but I am certain those days weighed heavier on her.

After a few days, she called me crying and said, Luz, I have been approved! God listened to my prayers. I feel so blessed that I can now go see a doctor. I will forever be grateful. God has seen the need in our community and has sent us this blessing.”

I met with her one last time to help her navigate the Kaiser portal and find her primary care doctor. She is now receiving the healthcare she needs.

She left our meeting clinging to her husband and leaning on her community.
