Marilyn didn’t miss a word.
She sat in the front row the whole time. Marilyn didn’t miss a moment.
This was our second year attending the Kaleo Conference at Azusa Pacific University, a one-day gathering for middle and high school students to reflect on how God is calling them to serve their communities. I brought a small group of youth leaders again this year, and each time I’m reminded why this matters.
Right now, I’m focused on developing the next generation to become equipped leaders, and who knows, maybe one of them will be doing my job soon. Before we get there, it’s notes scribbled in the margins. It’s a student leaning in, listening closely, starting to imagine their place in the world.
At Kaleo, the workshops helped our students think through how to face pain and disappointment with healthier coping strategies. But it also gave them space to see themselves as part of something bigger.
Watching Marilyn that day, I saw more than a student. I saw someone in the early stages of becoming.
I’m looking forward to seeing our students grow into who they’re meant to be. We’re planting seeds, and I can only pray I’ll get to see the fruit.
