What’s happening in the reading room?

Homework Club has long been one of the ways we walk with our students each week. Every Monday and Wednesday, our students come in for help with assignments, but for some of our elementary students, one of those harder assignments have been reading.

In an effort to help, we partnered with Parentis to offer more focused literacy support during Homework Club. While the larger group works on homework, a small group of students heads into our reading room to read one on one with volunteers. There, they practice, build confidence, and move at a pace that gives them space to grow.

We know reading shapes so much of a child’s experience in school. When a student begins to feel more confident reading out loud, recognizing words, and finishing a book they once found difficult, that confidence reaches beyond the reading room. It changes how they approach schoolwork, how they see themselves, and how willing they are to keep trying.

We recently celebrated our first round of student graduations from the program and welcomed a couple new readers. It was a meaningful milestone for the students who have been showing up, doing the work, and growing in confidence along the way.
