A reminder that we are not powerless

This week I had the chance to be with our youth as they passed out red cards, small pocket-sized reminders of our constitutional rights, to our neighbors and local businesses. One of the students said it best: “We just wanted people to feel less afraid.” It was simple and honest. It captured the spirit of the entire afternoon.

What struck me most was how seriously our students took it. They understood that not everyone grows up knowing what their rights are, and that fear can grow in the absence of knowledge. Some of them talked about how helpless they’ve felt at times, watching things happen that felt too big to stop. But this? This was something they could do.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the news, by the weight of it all. But watching our young people take that first step, to learn, to share, to connect, I felt a quiet kind of hope.
And maybe that’s how change starts. Small steps. A red card. A conversation. A reminder that we are not powerless.
