When Steven asked, “Jackie, can you help me today?”

With graduation around the corner, I’ve been thinking about the quieter ways our students grow throughout the year.

A few weeks ago, Jackie came straight from work to volunteer at Study Hour. She’s only been with us for about six months, but in that time, she’s become someone our students rely on, especially Steven. That day, he asked for her. He had homework he was stuck on, and he wanted her help.

They found a table and got to work. Not long after, Jocelyn walked by and quietly pulled up a chair, hoping she might get some help too. What a gift to witness, two students leaning into the support around them, and someone who keeps showing up.

Steven is wrapping up 9th grade with more confidence than he started. And Jackie keeps showing up, with patience, with consistency, and with the kind of presence that makes it easier for students to believe they can do this.

I'm happy to know Steven’s heading into sophomore year surrounded by people who believe in him.
